How to fix "Can't read from the source file or disk" Error. [Solved]

Now I am pretty sure that everyone who own a external USB storage device, like a pen drive or a hard drive (which everyone does), may face this problem at-least once in their digital lifetime. This particular data transfer/copy/backup error (which I've suffered through a LOT, until just recently I found the fix) is one of the most frustrating and irritating errors your usb storage device could ever give you. This is a windows prone error so mac and linux users may wanna turn around.

What is this error?

Can't read from the source file or disk, is an error that windows give you when you try to cut/copy a particular file from your external usb storage to another storage (both external or internal). And no matter how many times you try and what third-party tool you try to copy it with, its still gonna give you the error or is gonna be a very hard deal to get through.

The error dialog looks something like this:

Now most of you after continuously getting this error may perform a check disk, from the command prompt of your PC for finding any bad sectors in your drive, and most of the times you wouldn't get any. And that messes with our heads even more...

So how to fix it?

To copy the file thats giving you this problem, you'd first need a software named "EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard". This is a magical and life saving tool, that can not only recover and copy any file we are having trouble copying with, but can also recovery any DELETED file, that has been emptied from the recycle bin.

So obviously the Step-1 would be to download this software. After downloading the software, install it.

Step-2. Launch the software, the first window will ask you to select the file type you want the program to look for like text file .txt, document files .doc or executable files .exe etc or you may simply select 'All File Types' to look for all files, after selecting the file type, click on 'Next'.

Step-3. Then it will ask you to choose the drive you want to recover files from, after selecting the drive, Click on 'Scan'.

Now this (FIRST) scan is just a normal low priority scan it would take just few seconds to scan and will give you the result list, for us to recover our file, we'll have to have a Deep scan, so after the first scan process is complete (which wouldn't take long), on the bottom left side you would find the 'Deep Scan' button, simply click that and the deep scan process will be initiated.

*Remember the Deep Scan takes a lot of time to complete, it also depends on the size of the drive and how much data it has/have contained. So please be patient and let it finish scanning, trust me it will be worth waiting for.

Step-4. Once the deep scan is completed, navigate to the folder that has your error-nous file, and then just select it & click on the 'Recover' button on the bottom right side or right click on it and click on the 'Recover' menu. Then the software will ask you to browse where to save the file, choose a local directory and BAM its done.

-::Note::- The software I just mentioned above i.e., EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard is always changing its interface with its every update, so by the time you read this article and try the tool yourself, it may or may not have the same step(s) and GUI as I mentioned (like it may ask you to choose the drive first before selecting the file type etc), But the functionality of the software is always the same. But basically the general idea of what you have to do in order to get your file is mentioned above, so just use your common sense and find & navigate through the steps and you'll be fine. I used EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard 8.6 in this article.

I hope this would help you, It sure has helped me.
Losing your valuable data and files can be a very frustrating, keep your digital life safe..

Peace....

    1. Hello Aneto. Please make sure, you've selected the right drive and file type in the first screen of the program before scanning.

After the scan completion, you should navigate to the directory where your file exists with the problem, select it, and then recover.

Reply if you still face any issue.

    1. Hello Aneto. As of EaseUS Data Recovery Wizard 10.2.0, All you have to do is:

1: Launch the Application as Administrator*,

2: In the first screen select "All File Types" and click on "Next" button,

3: Then on the second screen, select the drive that has the file you want to copy. Lets say its on Drive J, so click on Drive J, (Make sure you haven't installed EaseUS on the same drive as your erroneous file! In our case Drive J, or else it wouldn't work!), and click on "Scan" Button,

4: After the first scan is complete, click on "Deep Scan" Button and wait for it to finish,

5: Once the deep scan is complete, simply use the search box given in the top panel of the software to find the file you wanna recover, or alternatively browse it from the left panel until you find your file,

6: Once you've found your file, right click on it, and click "Recover", select the location you wanna save it to, done!

  5. DVD freezes for various reasons, including dirty DVD, burning error (if the burnt disc), unmatched media player, region code or DVD machine laser aging. I think this full guide could also help.
