An Ode to Humanity - Human Rights Day Special

Us humans are really strange beings. We talk about human rights, tweet, post, and argue about human rights, make demands about our human rights, and some Einsteins don't even know what is a human right. But in reality we completely overlook how many rights we violate everyday, ourselves!

Now most of you would disagree, deny or even get offended with the above statement, but as bitter as it is to read, sadly its true.

And before you being to start a mental self-evaluation, here's a checklist to help you in it. If you do, ignore or encourage any of it, you're a human rights violator:

If you, your household or workplace employ a under-aged servant (Child Labor), You're a human rights violator.
If you're a Parent, and making your son or daughter marry at an early age (before 24 years of age) against their own free will, You're Violating your child's rights! (An Indian Prone Violation)
If you have more than one wife or husband (Known as Polygamy), You're a Violator. (A violation common to Muslims)
If you demand (or even support) for Dowry for marriage, You're a mean ole human rights violator.
Failure to prevent employers from discriminating in recruitment or in general endeavors at workplace. (based on sex, disability, race, political opinion, social origin, HIV status, etc.) (The right to work). Violation, Violation, Violation!

The above lists only normal violations, that occur in our day to day lives. There are soo many others like rape, slavery, genocide, war crimes etc that I didn't include as they aren't a common violation.

You don't need to do anything else, so long you ensure you don't commit, support or ignore any of the above mentioned violation.

For this occasion I'm sharing "And Still I Rise", a Poem by Maya Angelou. Its one of my favorites, and suits this post and topic well.

I hope you'd like it too:

``You may write me down in history
With your bitter, twisted lies,
You may tread me in the very dirt
But still, like dust, I'll rise.

Does my sassiness upset you?
Why are you beset with gloom?
'Cause I walk like I've got oil wells
Pumping in my living room.

Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,
Still I'll rise.

Did you want to see me broken?
Bowed head and lowered eyes?
Shoulders falling down like teardrops.
Weakened by my soulful cries.

Does my haughtiness offend you?
Don't you take it awful hard
'Cause I laugh like I've got gold mines
Diggin' in my own back yard.

You may shoot me with your words,
You may cut me with your eyes,
You may kill me with your hatefulness,
But still, like air, I'll rise.

Does my sexiness upset you?
Does it come as a surprise
That I dance like I've got diamonds
At the meeting of my thighs?

Out of the huts of history's shame
I rise
Up from a past that's rooted in pain
I rise
I'm a black ocean, leaping and wide,
Welling and swelling I bear in the tide.
Leaving behind nights of terror and fear
I rise
Into a daybreak that's wondrously clear
I rise
Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave,
I am the dream and the hope of the slave.
I rise
I rise
I rise. ´´

Happy Human Rights Day.. Check your Privilege.
